Property Name: Avonlea

Owners: Tim and Ruth Christopherson

Location: Four Mile Creek, via Orange NSW. Australia

People and History:

Avonlea is situated on the foothills of Mt Canobolas and receives an average rainfall in excess of 800 mm. We have hot summers and cold winters with an occasional snowfall. The topography is hilly. Tim's family have been graziers in the Orange district since the 1850's growing mainly sheep for their wool. Ruth and Tim became the owners of Avonlea in 1978 and have developed it as a sheep breeding enterprise. Tim's working life has been totally involved in the production of wool and the wool industry.

TRAMBE is derived from the initials of Tim, Ruth and their children – Anne, Macleay, Ben and Emily. Our children have various professions and each contribute to our TRAMBE dream – a sheep/wool enterprise that is family owned, family run, sustainable with ongoing genetic improvements in meat and fibre on a poll merino sheep.

Sustainable Production:

Our work towards sustainability so far has included:

• Riparian restoration of our section of Four Mile Creek

• Use of organic fertilisers

• Increase in the level of native grasses

• Greatly reduced use of chemicals on our flock

Our Fibre:

We are redesigning our fine wool Merino sheep. The wools are being transformed to a new level of softness and style. Our fleece selection is focused on increasing fibre density and fibre length. These two actions deliver remarkable results. Fleece weight increases quickly whilst the wool becomes very fine and silky. There is a high end market for supersoft Merino wools that feel like cashmere, and we are listening to our customer!

Benefits of SRS:

We have seen the following benefits since we started using the SRS Breeding System:

• An increase in our weaning percentage by 30%

• Cessation of mulesing 2007

• Improved mothering and bonding

• Improved growth rate and vigour

• Longer fibre allows a shearing management which can be used for improved muscle production in lambs and so earlier and better presentation of sheep for sale with higher body weights

• Shearing is faster and easier

• Improved cashflow spread with shearing every 7 -8 months
